/ˈkraf(t)smənˌShip/ - to obtain a skill in a particular craft, the quality of design shown in something made by hand, artistry.

Craftsmanship carries several different meanings depending on the person you ask.  To one, it may mean the craft of making things by hand, but to someone who runs a digital etsy shop it could pertain to anything “artsy” they sell on their ecommerce site.  The importance of craftsmanship no matter whom you ask is the passion behind the definition. To be a craftsman means you sincerely care about the product you’re creating. Whether you’re working with your hands or not, a craftsman’s project is driven by the passion they have for their skill or art.  So why is this important in today’s turn and burn economy? Because craftsmanship, by definition, also means quality.

Contractors, woodworkers, roofers, deck builders, and homeowners are exposed to a flooded market of products and purchase decision-making.  When one sets out on a project, they’re faced with several different brands and products who claim to be the exception in the industry.  The importance of building stuff by hand and by yourself holds such value in today’s market not only because of the experience but because of the quality you’re ensuring your clients.  When a client is able to see that time, skill and passion were put behind a product first-hand, our economy’s definition of quality changes for the better.

Making stuff ourselves also offers a sense of reward and accomplishment that is hard to gain anywhere else. But how do we ensure we’re building top of the line products in today’s market?

Materials – Choosing the right material for the right project the first time around is essential to success with a client project or renovation. Planning before executing is key, whether you’re building a fence or installing a new roof. Conduct the necessary research associated with each product to ensure you’re choosing the highest quality product.  Think about all the outlining factors for your client, like exposure to the elements, cost-efficiency, and durability for years to come.

Fasteners – Don’t waste your time with a craftsmanship project if you’re not going to invest time into researching the best fastener for the job. They are what hold the project together and keep clients happy.  Consider combination fasteners for your toughest projects to ensure superior hold. Combination fasteners, like SCRAIL® from The BECK Group, combine the best of both the nail and the screw. They offer dramatically increased holding power compared to nails, while gaining the added benefit of easy adjustment and quick removal.

Tools – Once you have the materials and fasteners picked out, using quality tools is what will ensure a exceptional finished product.  Read another blog from BECK America on what tools are best for your various projects here.

Being able to build was once a survival skill. In today’s world, it’s no longer really necessary to posess the skills needed to build. You can find just about anything pre-fabricated and ready to go, or hire someone with the skills and tools to do it for you. But there’s something genuine about building with your own two hands. It gives you a sense of real accomplishment and pride in your work. It reminds us that dedication and quality workmanship have value and that the act of building is at the very foundation of our modern existence. That experience is one that the folks at BECK America hold in the highest regard. We strive to provide our clients with the highest quality tools and fasteners to enable them to craft the best possible work.
