What Not to Do When Building a Wooden Crate

Wooden Crates

A wooden crate can provide a great option for shipping fragile goods because when built properly, it is highly resistant to being damaged the way that cardboard and plastic shipping containers can be. Wooden crates were once very expensive to construct and use, but today they are a good solution for affordable and efficient packaging when constructed properly.

When building a crate, there are some things NOT to do:

Do not underestimate the importance of hiring an expert to design the crate before you begin building it. The crate designer will consider the weight, materials and dimensions needed, as well as the transportation modes and storage conditions.

Do not assume all crates need to be the same shape. Each crate should be custom built for its specific contents, and this custom shape can maximize cost efficiency.

Do not use a cheap, sub-standard building material. A crate built with the proper wood and fasteners will be strong while using minimal materials. It’s important to know the shipping duration and storage period. Fasteners greatly affect the strength, durability and effectiveness of a crate. Screws are commonly used, but there is a better solution available with Crating SCRAIL®.  Crating SCRAIL® features course threads and plastic rope that ensures easier and consistent removal for dismantling.

When driven in with a nail gun, these crate fasteners can be used to build or seal crates at a rate two times faster than collated screws and up to eight times faster than traditional bulk screws driven in with an ordinary power drill or screwdriver. Sealing crates can now be done quickly and effectively.

Because Crating SCRAIL® fasteners can be removed almost as easily as they go in, both the wood and the crate fasteners can be reused, reducing the cost of using wooden crates for shipping.  Choosing the right fastener for crating can ensure any concerns over quality and cost are overcome.
